HB 283 HD2  RELATING TO EDUCATION                        EDU, JDC
           Proposes to make the student member of the Board of
           Education a voting member. (Takai/Morihara, etc.)

HB 284 HD1  RELATING TO EDUCATION                        EDU, WAM
           Established the Hawaii  state student council, with
           student  representatives   from  each  departmental
           school district; requires the council to conduct an
           annual conference of secondary school students; and
           requires the council to determine whether to select
           the  student  member  of  the  BOE  or  to  run  an
           election. (Takai/Morihara, etc.)

HB 1905    RELATING TO SCHOOL FEES                      EDU, WAM
HD2        Establishes a  pilot  project  that requires eighty
           per  cent   of   moneys   collected   by  Jefferson
           Elementary School  from  rental  fees  for usage of
           facilities be  deposited  with Jefferson Elementary
           School rather than the general fund. (Yamane)

HB 2098    RELATING TO CRIMINAL HISTORY                 EDU, JDC
HD2        Requires private schools,  in  cooperation with the
           Hawaii criminal  justice  data  center,  to conduct
           criminal history  verifications  of  applicants for
           employment   in   positions   necessitating   close
           proximity to children. (Ito/Stegmaier/Morihara)

HB 1914    RELATING TO COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL REFORM      EDU, WAM
HD1        Appropriates  funds  to   the   DOE  for  Highlands
           Intermediate School to  develop  a reading program,
           based  on  the   design   of  America's  Choice  (a
           comprehensive school reform program), to strengthen
           the reading ability of students who are not reading
           at grade level. (Yonamine/Takumi/Takai)
